Judo was developed in 1882 by Professor Jigoro Kano from the ancient martial art of Jujitsu. His objective was to create a method of training which made the most efficient use of mental and physical energy while building character through both mental and moral discipline. Judo, or “The Gentle Way” was the result of his efforts. In 1964, Judo became an official Olympic event.
Judo is a grappling sport. Judoka (judo students) learn throws, holds, and submission techniques. Judoka learn to fight against each other in competitions which are strictly regulated by international rules.

Students of Judo learn to be alert and responsive, make quick and effective decisions, and act promptly on them. As a result, they develop poise, self-confidence, self-control, patience, and imagination while strengthening their powers of observation, attention, reason, and judgment.

The club sponsors a variety of events throughout the year including local, national and international tournaments. Guest instructors and athletes from Japan are annual visitors to Steveston, coming to the club to compete and spend time working out with our members. Regularly, the club is home to workshops led by our own or visiting instructors who provide clinics in advanced Judo techniques.
